Arthur Andersen LLP was a Chicago-based American accounting firm providing auditing, tax advising, consulting and other professional services to large corporations. Arthur E. Andersen and Clarence DeLany founded Andersen, DeLany & Co. in 1913; after DeLany resigned, it became Arthur Andersen & Co. in 1918. Its first client was Milwaukee's Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, and a Milwaukee office opened in 1915. Andersen emphasized education and created the profession's first centralized training program. By 2001, the firm was one of the world's largest multinational corporations and part of the Big Five accounting firms. Andersen Consulting became a separate unit in 1989 and, after arbitration, adopted the Accenture name on January 1, 2001; Arthur Andersen then rebranded as Andersen. The firm collapsed in 2002 following scrutiny of its work for Enron and WorldCom. Its conviction related to Enron document destruction was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2005, but its operations had already been dismantled.
