Central of Georgia Railway

Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

The Central’s story began in 1833 as the Central Railroad and Canal Company of Georgia, reorganized in 1835 as the Central Rail Road and Banking Company. After outside investors took control in 1892, the system reemerged as the Central of Georgia Railway in 1895. Corporate reincarnation: an old railroad favorite.

Headquartered in Savannah, Georgia, the Central linked the port city with Macon by 1843, then expanded across Georgia and into Alabama and Tennessee. Its Savannah shops, offices, bridges, and roundhouse became one of America’s most important surviving nineteenth-century railroad complexes.

Cotton, timber, coal, tourists, and everyday travelers all rode the Central’s economy. The road weathered Civil War damage, recovered by June 1866, entered receivership in 1932, and emerged in 1948. Diesel power and consolidations kept the wheels turning through the postwar years.

Southern Railway acquired controlling interest in 1963; in 1971, Southern merged the Central with the Savannah and Atlanta Railway and Wrightsville and Tennille Railroad into the Central of Georgia Railroad Company. Our Central of Georgia Railway collection celebrates the stubbornly stylish machinery of connection—steel rails, Southern grit, Savannah brick, and a corporate ghost that still knows the right way.
