J. W. Knapp Company

Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Before it was Knapp’s, Joseph W. Knapp and Frank W. Jewett opened the Jewett & Knapp dry-goods, coats, and carpets business in Albion, Michigan, in 1893. By 1897, it had moved to Lansing, planting the seed of a longtime downtown retail institution.

In 1908, Frank Lackey acquired the business and it became the J.W. Knapp Company, with Knapp continuing to direct operations. The store grew from South Washington Street into a familiar Central Michigan department-store name: the sort of place built for fashion floors, gift counters, seasonal displays, and the heroic retail expedition downtown.

Its definitive home rose at 300 South Washington Avenue in Lansing in 1937–38. Designed by the Bowd-Munson Company, the Art Moderne flagship opened in 1938 and later expanded, becoming a boldly streamlined block of glass brick, blue-and-yellow panels, and serious department-store ambition.

Knapp’s added mall locations during the 1960s and 1970s. By 1980 it was a subsidiary of L.S. Good & Co.; J.W. Knapp filed for Chapter 11 in May, and its stores were ordered closed that October. The three mall locations were sold to JCPenney, while the downtown building moved on to office and mixed-use life.

Our J. W. Knapp Company collection celebrates Lansing retail grandeur, Art Moderne swagger, and the cheerful ghost of a hometown store that once made shopping feel like an occasion.
