Joske's
Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Joske’s began in San Antonio in 1867, when German immigrant Julius Joske opened a dry-goods store near the city’s military and trade routes. After several names and locations—including J. Joske, J. Joske and Sons, and Joske Brothers—the business settled at Alamo and Commerce streets in 1887. That downtown flagship became “The Big Store,” a landmark retail palace with escalators, air conditioning, elaborate displays, and an aggressively Texas-sized reputation.
Alexander Joske bought out the family interests in 1903. Following his death, Hahn Department Stores purchased the company in 1929; Allied Stores Corporation took over Hahn in 1932. Under Allied, Joske’s grew from its San Antonio base into a regional chain, adding Texas locations and eventually a Phoenix store. The brand helped shape San Antonio holiday lore too, from Fantasyland and Rusty the Reindeer to early River Walk Christmas lights. Department stores: where wonder, wool coats, and fluorescent lighting joined forces.
Our Joske's collection celebrates the big-store swagger of old San Antonio: cowboy-and-steer signage, downtown spectacle, holiday-window magic, and a Texas retail institution that vanished into Dillard’s in 1987. The name left the storefronts, but not the memories—or the impeccable urge to browse five floors for something you absolutely did not plan to buy.
