NeXT, Inc.

Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Founded in September 1985 by Steve Jobs after his departure from Apple, NeXT began in Palo Alto, California, and later established its defining headquarters at 900 Chesapeake Drive in Redwood City. It gathered veterans of Apple’s Macintosh and Lisa teams to build high-end computing for universities, researchers, and ambitious organizations with serious budgets.

NeXT introduced its black, cubic workstation in 1988: a design object with a serious price tag and an equally serious technical agenda. The machines paired distinctive hardware with the NeXTSTEP operating environment, bringing object-oriented software development, Unix foundations, and a polished graphical interface into one famously uncompromising package.

The hardware business did not achieve the intended scale. In February 1993, NeXT announced it would stop producing computers and concentrate on software. The company subsequently became NeXT Software, Inc., putting its development tools and OPENSTEP technology on other hardware platforms. The cube left the building; the code got legs.

Our NeXT, Inc. collection celebrates the beautifully severe Silicon Valley outfit that made computers look like museum pieces and treated software as the real long game. Apple announced its acquisition of NeXT on December 20, 1996, and completed it on February 4, 1997. The deal returned Jobs to Apple and carried NeXT’s software legacy into Apple’s next chapter.
