The story started in New York City on February 17, 1859, when George Gilman and George Huntington Hartford launched a tea, coffee and spice venture known as the Great American Tea Company. In 1869, the business adopted The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company name, a railroad-age flex that promised groceries with continental ambition. Packaged Thea-Necter tea, baking powder and Eight O’Clock coffee turned the shopkeeper into a branded-goods pioneer.
A&P moved its corporate headquarters from lower Manhattan to Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1907. The stripped-down A&P Economy Store arrived in 1912, favoring sharp prices over delivery, credit and other frills. That formula helped the chain soar to 15,709 stores in 1930; at its mid-century height, the initials on the storefront were practically a national compass point.
Our The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) collection celebrates the red-and-black grocery giant that made the weekly run feel like a very efficient expedition. A&P acquired Pathmark in 2007, entered Chapter 11 in December 2010, reorganized as a private company in 2012, and filed again on July 19, 2015. Store sales followed and the remaining supermarkets had closed by November 25, 2015. The carts rolled away; the memories, naturally, refused to punch out.
