2Wire, Inc. was a San Jose, California computer hardware manufacturer active from 1998 to 2010. Founded in 1998 by Brian Hinman, Pasquale Romano, Brad Kayton, Timothy Peers, and Tom Spalding, the company introduced its first HomePortal residential gateway at the January 2000 Consumer Electronics Show. The DSL modem and router combined home networking, firewall protection, and remote management. A wireless residential gateway followed in January 2001. In 2002, 2Wire created its CMS remote customer premises management platform and published the Open Gateway Management Protocol, which became the basis for the TR-069 WAN management protocol ratified in 2004. The company acquired Sugar Media in 2003 and launched the MediaPortal multi-service media platform in spring 2004. Its hardware was distributed through broadband providers in North America, Europe, Australia, and Singapore. 2Wire acquired Kenati Technologies in October 2007 and had shipped more than 20 million residential gateways by June 2008. In July 2010, Pace plc agreed to acquire 2Wire for $475 million.
