2Wire, Inc. was a San Jose, California computer hardware manufacturer active from 1998 to 2010. Founded in 1998 by Brian Hinman, Pasquale Romano, Brad Kayton, Timothy Peers, and Tom Spalding, it focused on equipment and platforms for telecommunications providers. Its first HomePortal residential gateway arrived in January 2000, combining a DSL modem and router with home networking, firewall protection, and remote management. A wireless residential gateway followed in January 2001. In 2002, 2Wire introduced its CMS remote customer premises management platform and published the Open Gateway Management Protocol, a basis for the TR-069 protocol ratified in 2004. The company acquired Sugar Media in 2003 and Kenati Technologies in 2007. Its MediaPortal platform launched in 2004, while the HomePortal iNID arrived in 2006 with VDSL2 and fiber support. By June 2008, 2Wire had shipped more than 20 million residential gateways. In July 2010, United Kingdom company Pace plc agreed to acquire 2Wire for $475 million.
