3Com Corporation Backpack
Carry a piece of networking history into a busy day. Founded in 1979 by Robert Metcalfe, Howard Charney, and others, 3Com helped bring Ethernet and local-area networking into offices and personal-computer setups. Its story grew from early adapter cards to switches, routers, wireless products, and more. This backpack listing is for collectors and longtime technology fans who remember when connecting computers reshaped work, and for anyone drawn to the names that helped build the networks we use today.
3Com Corporation was an American digital electronics manufacturer founded in 1979 by Robert Metcalfe, Howard Charney, and others. Its name referred to Computer Communication Compatibility, and its work centered on Ethernet, a technology Metcalfe had co-invented. After developing early Ethernet at Xerox PARC with David Boggs, Metcalfe left Xerox and formed the company. 3Com began with Ethernet adapter cards and expanded into local-area-network software, servers, switches, routers, wireless products, and voice and security systems. It became public in 1984 and merged with Bridge Communications in 1987, adding communications servers and network equipment. A 1997 merger with USRobotics brought modem products and Palm into the company; Palm and USRobotics later became independent again. In 2003, 3Com formed H3C with Huawei and moved its headquarters from Santa Clara, California, to Marlborough, Massachusetts. It acquired full ownership of H3C in 2007. Hewlett-Packard completed its acquisition of 3Com on April 12, 2010. After HP's 2015 separation, the business continued with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and was integrated into its Aruba Networks unit.
