3DLABS Inc. Ltd. was a fabless semiconductor company founded in 1994 by Yavuz Ahıska and Osman Kent, with headquarters in San Jose, California. It grew from a management buy-out of DuPont Pixel Systems in the UK in April 1994 and went public on Nasdaq in October 1996. The company developed GLINT and PERMEDIA graphics technology for computer-aided design and digital content creation, and sold its own Wildcat and Oxygen graphics cards. Its GLINT 300SX was described as the first single-chip, 3D-capable graphics device shipped on boards from multiple vendors; Gamma and Permedia also marked early milestones in PC graphics processing. 3DLABS acquired Dynamic Pictures in July 1998 and Intergraph’s Intense3D division in July 2000, then was acquired by Creative Labs in June 2002. In February 2006, it announced a shift away from professional 3D graphics chips toward embedded and mobile media processors. Its DMS-02, introduced in November 2006, supported 720P HD video for portable devices. In January 2009, its SoC team joined a Creative product division and the business was rebranded as Singapore-based ZiiLABS. Processor-related products were subsequently sold and supported under the ZiiLABS name.
