Founded in Detroit, Michigan, in 1909 by Charles S. Abbott, Abbott-Detroit made luxury automobiles for the early twentieth-century market. Its first car was designed by John G. Utz, whose earlier work included the Chalmers and experience at Olds Motor Works and the Autocar Company. The car featured a Continental engine and was praised at its presentation for its power and design. By 1913, the company guaranteed its cars for life and had standardized electric lighting and starting. It expected total production of 3,000 cars for the 1911 model year. The range included roadsters, a demi tonneau, a limousine, and Models F, L, and K. Around June 1910, the company opened a dealership in Kansas City, Missouri, at 321 Admiral Boulevard. As output reached 15 to 20 cars a day by 1916, Abbott-Detroit moved from Detroit to a larger facility in Cleveland. The move strained its finances, and the company declared bankruptcy in April 1918. Abbott-Detroit automobiles were manufactured from 1909 through 1919.
