GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Bring a chapter of computing history along on your travels with this AdStar Luggage Tag. Formed in 1992, AdStar brought IBM storage businesses together across eleven sites in eight countries, creating a major enterprise devoted to disk, tape, optical storage, and software. Its name, Advanced Storage and Retrieval, reflects an era when information storage stood at the center of corporate technology. A thoughtful pick for collectors, technology historians, and anyone who enjoys distinctive stories from the business world.
AdStar, an acronym for Advanced Storage and Retrieval, was an IBM division covering the company’s disk, tape and optical storage products, as well as storage software. In 1992, IBM combined its storage-products businesses, bringing together eleven sites in eight countries to form the division. At its creation, AdStar was described as the world’s largest information-storage business. It reported revenue of $6.11 billion, including $500 million in sales to other manufacturers, and gross profit of about $440 million before taxes and restructuring. In April 1993, IBM established AdStar as a wholly owned subsidiary to give it greater autonomy and encourage sales to outside manufacturers. Ed Zschau, an outsider to IBM, became chairman and CEO. IBM’s leadership change from John Akers to Lou Gerstner that same month shifted the company’s approach from a possible spinout toward a turnaround. AdStar’s disk-drive business remained troubled, with revenue declining to $3 billion in 1995. Zschau left in October 1995 and IBM executive Jim Vanderslice replaced him. The division was later dismantled. Its AdStar Distributed Storage Manager software was renamed Tivoli Storage Manager in 1999, and the disk-drive business component was sold to Hitachi in 2003.
