Take island aviation history along for the journey with this Aero Virgin Islands travel mug. The airline connected St. Thomas, Saint Croix, and San Juan, building a distinctive place in Caribbean air travel with scheduled routes and charter service. Its DC-3 and C-47 story evokes the regional journeys of the late 1970s and 1980s. Choose it for a travel-loving aviation enthusiast, an airline memorabilia collector, or anyone who enjoys discovering the history behind island connections.
Aero Virgin Islands Corp. was a St. Thomas-based airline that began Caribbean operations in the late 1970s. Its Federal Aviation Administration operations specifications under Part 121 were issued on March 2, 1977. Scheduled inter-island service linked St. Thomas, Saint Croix, and San Juan, with charter flights to other Caribbean destinations. The airline initially operated DC-3-202 aircraft and, around 1984, began using DC-3A, DC-3B, and DC-3C (C-47) aircraft leased from Puerto Rico; the aircraft had previously been part of Air BVI’s fleet. Its competitor Prinair went bankrupt in 1984, after which Aero Virgin Islands became a major passenger carrier for several years. In 1986, the company recruited four pilots with DC-3 experience while attempting, without success, to restore its Part 121 certificate and add a Martin 404. Hurricane Hugo damaged or destroyed aircraft at St. Thomas and San Juan in September 1989. Increasing competition, including from LIAT and American Eagle, contributed to the airline ceasing operations by 1990. Joseph A. Cranston founded the airline, and Reuben B. Wheatley served as president throughout its existence.
