GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Add Air Berlin aviation history to a golf collection or choose a thoughtful present for a golfer who loves airline stories. Established in 1978 to serve West Berlin, Air Berlin grew from a charter operator into a major carrier as German travel changed after reunification. Its expansion, airline acquisitions, and Oneworld membership marked an ambitious era, before insolvency and a final flight from Tegel in 2017 brought operations to a close. These golf balls connect a familiar airline name with a remarkable chapter of Berlin air travel.
Air Berlin began in 1978 as Air Berlin USA, an American-owned charter airline founded to serve West Berlin, where Cold War restrictions limited which airlines could use the air corridors. Its first revenue flight left Berlin Tegel for Palma de Mallorca on 28 April 1979. After German reunification, the company was restructured in 1991 as a German-owned business and expanded from holiday charters into scheduled and low-fare routes. It acquired domestic carrier dba in 2006 and leisure airline LTU in 2007, adding scale and long-haul reach; the LTU brand ended in 2009. Air Berlin joined the Oneworld alliance in 2012 and became Germany’s second-largest airline at its peak. Persistent losses led to insolvency in August 2017. The airline ended operations in October: its final flight landed at Berlin Tegel on 27 October. Lufthansa Group took over aircraft and parts of the business, while EasyJet agreed to take aircraft and staff for Berlin services. The Air Berlin trademark rights were later sold to the founder of Sundair.
