GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a regional aviation story along on your travels with an Air Carolina passport cover. Florence Airlines began as a Florence-based carrier connecting its home city with Charlotte, then adopted the Air Carolina name in 1975 and served additional southeastern destinations. Its history reflects the character of small airlines and the propeller aircraft that linked communities across the Carolinas and Georgia. A fitting travel keepsake for airline collectors, aviation enthusiasts, and fans of regional history.
Air Carolina began as Florence Airlines, a regional carrier based in Florence, South Carolina. The company was certified on December 5, 1967, with Sheffield P. Wilds as its first president. In 1973, it operated three daily scheduled passenger and cargo flights between Florence and Charlotte, North Carolina, using an Aero Commander 500B and two Piper Cherokee Sixes. A Piper Cherokee 140 was also used for pilot training between 1973 and 1976. By early 1975, William E. Smith was president, and the schedule had been reduced to twice-daily passenger service between Florence and Charlotte. On March 30, 1975, the airline adopted the Air Carolina name and served Atlanta, Greenwood and Anderson, as well as Charlotte, with Piper Navajo Chieftains, Britten-Norman Islanders and a Twin Otter. By 1981, passenger service linked Charlotte, Hickory, North Carolina, and Florence. The fleet then included several Piper types: Navajo Chieftains, a Navajo, an Aztec, a Seneca and a Lance. The airline was later absorbed by Atlantis Airlines in 1980, a date that precedes the 1981 service description in the article.
