Carry a piece of southeastern aviation history on your travels with this Air South luggage tag. Founded in 1969 as Nationwide Airlines Southeast, the Georgia airline connected regional communities with scheduled flights aboard compact aircraft. Its roots at St. Simons Island and operating base in Atlanta give this short-lived carrier a distinct place in airline history. Air South was acquired by Florida Airlines in 1975 and ceased operations in 1978, making its name a compelling find for collectors and aviation enthusiasts.
Air South was a United States regional airline founded in 1969 as Nationwide Airlines Southeast. Its headquarters were at Malcom McKinnon Airport on St. Simons Island, Georgia, while its operating base was Atlanta Municipal Airport. The airline served destinations in the southeastern United States with scheduled passenger flights, using Fairchild F-27s, Martin 4-0-4s and Beechcraft Model 99 aircraft. In 1975, Florida Airlines acquired Air South, making it a wholly owned subsidiary alongside Shawnee Airlines. Air South continued to fly under its own name for several years after the acquisition. Following the Airline Deregulation Act, the airline ceased operations in 1978. Florida Airlines subsequently operated as Florida Airlines and Air South until 1981, marking the end of the shared brand. The company’s history also includes two documented Beechcraft 99 incidents: Flight 168 crashed near Monroe, Georgia, on July 6, 1969, killing all 14 people aboard; on March 31, 1974, another aircraft was destroyed by fire while taxiing at Malcom McKinnon Airport, and all four people escaped.
