Take a reminder of southeastern aviation history along on your journeys with this Air South passport cover. Founded in 1969 as Nationwide Airlines Southeast, the Georgia airline connected regional destinations through scheduled passenger service. Its headquarters were on St. Simons Island, with Atlanta as its operating base, and its aircraft served a network across the Southeast. Florida Airlines acquired the company in 1975; Air South ceased operations in 1978. Its brief history makes this a thoughtful pick for travelers and airline-history collectors alike.
Air South was a United States regional airline founded in 1969 as Nationwide Airlines Southeast. Its headquarters were at Malcom McKinnon Airport on St. Simons Island, Georgia, while its operating base was Atlanta Municipal Airport. The airline served destinations in the southeastern United States with scheduled passenger flights, using Fairchild F-27s, Martin 4-0-4s and Beechcraft Model 99 aircraft. In 1975, Florida Airlines acquired Air South, making it a wholly owned subsidiary alongside Shawnee Airlines. Air South continued to fly under its own name for several years after the acquisition. Following the Airline Deregulation Act, the airline ceased operations in 1978. Florida Airlines subsequently operated as Florida Airlines and Air South until 1981, marking the end of the shared brand. The company’s history also includes two documented Beechcraft 99 incidents: Flight 168 crashed near Monroe, Georgia, on July 6, 1969, killing all 14 people aboard; on March 31, 1974, another aircraft was destroyed by fire while taxiing at Malcom McKinnon Airport, and all four people escaped.
