AirAsia was established by Malaysian conglomerate DRB-HICOM on 20 December 1993 as a full-service carrier and began flying on 18 November 1996, with an inaugural Kuala Lumpur–Langkawi service. Facing heavy debts and competition, it was acquired on 5 September 2001 by Tony Fernandes and Kamarudin Meranun through Tune Air Sdn Bhd. On 15 January 2002, the airline adopted a low-cost, no-frills model, marking a defining brand transition. It expanded from Malaysia into regional markets, establishing Thai AirAsia in 2003 and Indonesia AirAsia in 2005, and adding hubs including Senai, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. AirAsia launched Philippines AirAsia in 2012 and AirAsia India in 2014; the latter was sold to Tata Sons in 2022 and merged with Air India Express in 2023. AirAsia X, its long-haul operation, merged into AirAsia Group, bringing short- and long-haul services under a unified network. On 28 January 2022, AirAsia Group changed its corporate name to Capital A, while its airline business retained the AirAsia brand. In 2024, AirAsia X agreed to acquire AirAsia and AirAsia Aviation Group, with a plan to consolidate AirAsia-branded airlines under the AirAsia X brand.
