AirTran Airways was a U.S. low-cost airline headquartered in Orlando, Florida. It began in 1993 as Conquest Sun Airlines, formed by the management of Destination Sun Airways and Conquest Airlines, and started Boeing 737-200 service to and from Orlando. AirTran Corporation purchased the carrier in 1994 and renamed it AirTran Airways; it later placed the airline under the independent Airways Corporation holding company. In 1997, ValuJet's holding company acquired Airways Corporation, adopted the AirTran Holdings name, and renamed ValuJet Airlines as AirTran Airlines. Operations and fleet were transferred into AirTran Airways in 1998, and AirTran Airlines merged into it in 1999. AirTran grew around its Atlanta hub, operated Boeing 717-200 and 737-700 aircraft, and expanded across the United States, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Southwest Airlines acquired AirTran and AirTran Holdings on May 2, 2011. Its 737-700s joined Southwest, while its 717s were leased to Delta Air Lines beginning in 2013. AirTran's final revenue flight operated from Atlanta to Tampa on December 28, 2014.
