AJWright, formatted as A.J. Wright until 2009, was an American retail chain owned by TJX. Established on September 20, 1998, it opened its first six stores in the northeastern United States that fall. Its first three locations opened simultaneously in Brockton, Somerville, and Malden, Massachusetts. The chain sold clothing, home goods, gifts, footwear, accessories, and fragrances at prices below regular retail prices, with new merchandise arriving frequently. It grew to 25 stores by 2000 and 40 by December 2001. After opening many additional locations, the chain had 162 stores in 2006; TJX announced that November it would close 34 underperforming stores. AJWright had about 129 locations in 2007. In December 2010, TJX announced a consolidation that would end the chain. In early 2011, remaining locations closed or were converted to other TJX brands, including T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods. The transition also involved the closure of distribution centers and approximately 4,400 layoffs. AJWright operated from 1998 to 2011 and was part of TJX's portfolio of off-price retailers.
