GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep a small reminder of Alaska’s aviation beginnings in view with this Alaska Star Airlines Square Porcelain Fridge Magnet. Star Air Service launched in Anchorage in 1932, serving the territory with flying lessons and charter flights. After acquisitions and route growth, the company took the Alaska Star Airlines name in 1942, on its way to becoming Alaska Airlines. For collectors, travelers, and airline-history enthusiasts, this piece celebrates the people and changing identities behind a lasting connection to Alaska.
Star Air Service began in Anchorage in 1932, after three Seattle pilots shipped a biplane to Alaska by steamship. Incorporated on April 14 with $4,000 in capital, the fledgling business offered flying lessons and charter flights. After its first aircraft crashed, financial support helped it acquire an enclosed-cabin plane suited to winter operations. In 1934, Star bought McGee Airways, becoming Alaska’s largest carrier, though financial strain and management challenges persisted. Following a change in ownership, the company was renamed Star Air Lines on November 27, 1937. Route regulation beginning in 1938 helped drive consolidation among Alaska carriers. In 1942, new owners acquired Mirow Air Service, Lavery Air Service, and Pollack Flying Service, adding routes serving Nome, Fairbanks, Anchorage, and the Kuskokwim area. The expanded business became Alaska Star Airlines on July 6, 1942. On September 16, 1943, it adopted the name Alaska Airlines; incorporation under that name followed on May 2, 1944. The sequence links an Anchorage bush-flying operation to the airline that continues to operate today.
