Albanian Airlines MAK Sh.p.k was based in Tirana, Albania, and operated scheduled international services from Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza. Established in May 1991 as Arberia Airlines, it initially used Tupolev Tu-134 aircraft. Renamed Albanian Airlines in May 1992, it began public operations on 20 June as a joint venture between state-owned Albtransport and Austria’s Tyrolean Airways. The venture began with a leased Dash 8, but Tyrolean ended its contract in 1994. That year, the airline was privatised and sold to Kuwait-based M.A. Kharafi & Sons Group. Scheduled service resumed in October 1995 with a leased Airbus A320. Following restructuring in 1997, the carrier expanded European routes. It began replacing Tupolevs with BAe 146 regional jets in 2001, adding aircraft in 2003 and 2004. Ownership changed in 2008, when Tirana-based Advanced Construction Group acquired the company; in 2009, Turkey’s Evsen Group acquired 93%, with ACG retaining 7%. After operational, technical and financial difficulties, Albania’s Civil Aviation Authority revoked its license in November 2011 and flights stopped. A 2012 court decision returned the 93% shareholding to ACG, leaving it with all shares, but the airline did not resume operations.
