Carry a piece of Albanian aviation history alongside your travel documents with this Albatros Airways passport cover. The Tirana-based low-cost airline began operating in 2004, serving Italian destinations and Istanbul from Rinas Mother Teresa Airport. Its Fokker 100 service reflects a brief era of regional travel, before authorities grounded the carrier in September 2006. Made for travelers and collectors who value airline history, this keepsake recalls the routes and stories that linked Albania with neighboring destinations.
Albatros Airways Sh.p.k was a low-cost airline based in Tirana, Albania. Established in 2004, it began operations on 3 November of that year, serving destinations in Italy and Turkey from its main base at Rinas Mother Teresa Airport in Tirana. Its routes included Italian cities such as Genoa, Milan, Pescara, Pisa, Rimini, Venice and Verona, as well as Istanbul. The airline operated Fokker 100 aircraft; by August 2006, its listed fleet consisted of one aircraft leased from Montenegro Airlines. On 31 August 2006, Albanian aviation authorities notified the airline by telephone that it would be grounded, and the grounding took effect on 1 September. The stated reason was unpaid airport and air traffic control fees. Local media also reported that the airline had been advised to stop selling tickets. The decision prompted heated political debate: opposition figures and the airline’s management accused the government of acting against it and violating free-market principles, while the Office of the President of Albania was accused of favoring the carrier. The article records no merger or successor.
