Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Mark a place for an early internet pioneer with this AltaVista Metal Business Card Holder. AltaVista began as a way to demonstrate Digital Equipment Corporation hardware and make public network files easier to find. Its 1995 launch brought fast crawling and full-text search to a rapidly expanding web, while its later changes in ownership trace the shifting business of online search. A distinctive desk accessory for collectors, technology professionals, and admirers of search-engine history.
AltaVista was a pioneering web search engine created by researchers at Digital Equipment Corporation to showcase company hardware and make files on its public network easier to find. Based in Palo Alto, California, it publicly launched on December 15, 1995, with a fast web crawler called Scooter and an efficient search database called TurboVista. It offered a full-text, Boolean-searchable index of the World Wide Web, and traffic grew from 300,000 hits on launch day to more than 80 million per day by 1997. Yahoo used AltaVista search results exclusively from 1996 until the arrangement ended in 1998. After Compaq acquired Digital Equipment Corporation in January 1998, AltaVista became part of Compaq. In 1999, Compaq spun off the service, redesigned it as a web portal, and sold 83 percent to CMGI. AltaVista later returned to a search-focused design. Overture Services acquired it in February 2003, and Yahoo acquired Overture in July that year. In June 2013, the AltaVista domain redirected to Yahoo Search.
