Compaq acquired Digital Equipment Corporation in January 1998 and, as part of the transaction, acquired AltaVista. Compaq spun off AltaVista in January 1999 and repositioned it as a web portal; later that year, it sold 83 percent of the company to CMGI. After subsequent ownership changes, Overture Services acquired AltaVista in February 2003, and Yahoo acquired Overture in July 2003. AltaVista's traffic later fell amid competition from Google Search and other services. In June 2013, its domain redirected to Yahoo Search.
