Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a piece of early web history along on every journey with this AltaVista Luggage Tag. Launched in Palo Alto in 1995, AltaVista helped people explore a rapidly expanding World Wide Web with its searchable index and fast Scooter crawler. Its story also spans a Yahoo search partnership, the Babel Fish translation service, and a changing technology business. A fitting travel companion for longtime web enthusiasts, search-history collectors, and anyone who remembers discovering the internet one query at a time.
AltaVista was created by researchers at Digital Equipment Corporation to demonstrate company hardware and improve access to files on its public network. Paul Flaherty proposed the project, Louis Monier programmed its web crawler, and Michael Burrows wrote its indexer. Based in Palo Alto, California, AltaVista publicly launched on December 15, 1995, with a fast, multi-threaded crawler called Scooter and a backend database called TurboVista. It offered a searchable web index and became the exclusive provider of search results for Yahoo in 1996. In 1997 it introduced Babel Fish, a web-based text and webpage translation service. Compaq acquired Digital Equipment Corporation in January 1998 and, as part of the transaction, acquired AltaVista. Compaq spun off AltaVista in January 1999 and repositioned it as a web portal; later that year, it sold 83 percent of the company to CMGI. After subsequent ownership changes, Overture Services acquired AltaVista in February 2003, and Yahoo acquired Overture in July 2003. AltaVista's traffic later fell amid competition from Google Search and other services. In June 2013, its domain redirected to Yahoo Search.
