Natural gas trading increasingly dominated the portfolio, and assets under management reached as much as $9.2 billion. When natural gas prices moved against its positions, the fund suffered losses exceeding $6 billion in 2006. Amaranth disclosed major losses to investors on September 18, then transferred its energy portfolio to Citadel LLC and JPMorgan Chase. Its founder notified investors of a trading suspension on September 29, 2006; the fund hired Fortress Investment Group to liquidate assets on October 1. After the collapse, Maounis founded Verition Fund Management, which hired several former Amaranth employees. The name Amaranth came from a flower described as retaining vivid color after death.
