Product Details & Size Guide

GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Take the story of Amaranth Advisors along on the road. The Greenwich firm began as a multi-strategy hedge fund, then shifted toward energy trading as natural gas became central to its portfolio. Its reported 2005 gains and severe 2006 losses mark a memorable episode in financial history. This travel mug gives collectors and market watchers a distinctive way to recognize that rise and collapse during commutes, workdays, or trips, and makes a considered present for someone fascinated by commodities markets.

Amaranth Advisors LLC was an American multi-strategy hedge fund founded in 2000 by Nicholas M. Maounis and based in Greenwich, Connecticut. The firm initially relied heavily on convertible arbitrage, a strategy Maounis had worked with before founding the company. From 2004 to 2005, Amaranth shifted toward energy trading, where Canadian trader Brian Hunter focused on natural gas. In 2005, the fund reportedly earned about $1 billion as energy prices rose after Hurricane Katrina curtailed production. Natural gas trading increasingly dominated the portfolio, and assets under management reached as much as $9.2 billion. When natural gas prices moved against its positions, the fund suffered losses exceeding $6 billion in 2006. Amaranth disclosed major losses to investors on September 18, then transferred its energy portfolio to Citadel LLC and JPMorgan Chase. Its founder notified investors of a trading suspension on September 29, 2006; the fund hired Fortress Investment Group to liquidate assets on October 1. After the collapse, Maounis founded Verition Fund Management, which hired several former Amaranth employees. The name Amaranth came from a flower described as retaining vivid color after death.
