Product Details & Size Guide
Carry a piece of Phoenix aviation history into everyday journeys. America West Airlines began flying in 1983 with three leased Boeing 737s and grew into a network serving cities across the country. Phoenix Sky Harbor became its principal hub, while Las Vegas and Columbus added chapters to its expansion. The airline later joined US Airways, but its former identity remains a compelling part of airline history. This backpack celebrates the people and places connected to that story, from Tempe beginnings to the CACTUS callsign.
America West Airlines was established in February 1981 and began flying on August 1, 1983, from Phoenix, Arizona, with three leased Boeing 737s. Headquartered in Tempe, it grew quickly: by 1984 it served 23 cities, and Phoenix Sky Harbor became its principal hub. It added a Las Vegas hub in 1985–86 and a Columbus hub in 1993, while expanding service with Boeing and Airbus aircraft. Rapid growth, high operating costs, and rising fuel expenses led to bankruptcy in June 1991. The airline operated under bankruptcy protection until 1994, when a reorganization involving Mesa Airlines and Continental Airlines helped it resume growth. It introduced a new logo and livery, and later added online ticket purchasing. In 2005, America West entered a merger with US Airways, structured as a purchase of US Airways by America West Holdings but organized as a reverse merger. The combined airline adopted the US Airways name; from January 2006, America West flights and most airport signage carried that brand. Operating certificates merged in September 2007, while the combined airline retained America West's CACTUS callsign and AWE code. US Airways later merged with American Airlines in 2013, and the US Airways brand ended in 2015. Phoenix remained a hub for American Airlines.
