Product Details & Size Guide

GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

America West Airlines began service in 1983, flying from Phoenix with three leased Boeing 737s before expanding to hubs in Las Vegas and Columbus. This infant bodysuit shares a piece of aviation history with the next generation of airline enthusiasts and collectors. The carrier’s growth, 1991 bankruptcy, 1994 reorganization, and transition into US Airways make its story an enduring part of the Phoenix aviation landscape. A meaningful choice for families who enjoy airline history and want to introduce a memorable former brand to a young traveler.

America West Airlines was established in February 1981 and began flying on August 1, 1983, from Phoenix, Arizona, with three leased Boeing 737s. Headquartered in Tempe, it grew quickly: by 1984 it served 23 cities, and Phoenix Sky Harbor became its principal hub. It added a Las Vegas hub in 1985–86 and a Columbus hub in 1993, while expanding service with Boeing and Airbus aircraft. Rapid growth, high operating costs, and rising fuel expenses led to bankruptcy in June 1991. The airline operated under bankruptcy protection until 1994, when a reorganization involving Mesa Airlines and Continental Airlines helped it resume growth. It introduced a new logo and livery, and later added online ticket purchasing. In 2005, America West entered a merger with US Airways, structured as a purchase of US Airways by America West Holdings but organized as a reverse merger. The combined airline adopted the US Airways name; from January 2006, America West flights and most airport signage carried that brand. Operating certificates merged in September 2007, while the combined airline retained America West's CACTUS callsign and AWE code. US Airways later merged with American Airlines in 2013, and the US Airways brand ended in 2015. Phoenix remained a hub for American Airlines.
