This passport cover connects travel with a story of regional beginnings, national growth, changing store identities, and the company history that interests retail collectors.
American Freight began in Lima, Ohio, in 1994, when Steve Belford founded a store called American Freight Furniture & Mattress. By 2014, the retailer had grown to 95 stores across 18 states. In October of that year, an affiliate of New York private equity firm The Jordan Company acquired the business. Franchise Group purchased American Freight for $450 million on February 14, 2020, and combined it with former Sears Outlet stores under the American Freight Furniture, Mattress, Appliance brand. After months of losses and turmoil, Franchise Group announced in November 2024 that it was preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. On November 3, Franchise Group and its affiliated subsidiaries filed for protection in Delaware. American Freight liquidation sales began November 5, and stores were expected to close by year-end. In January 2025, a bankruptcy judge approved the sale of up to 28 stores and one distribution center to AF Newco I LLC. Two additional locations were included initially but withheld over possible state law issues. AF Newco I LLC planned to reopen the 28 stores and distribution center later in 2025.
