American Motors Corporation (AMC), commonly called American Motors, was formed on May 1, 1954, through the merger of Nash-Kelvinator Corporation and Hudson Motor Car Company. Based in the United States, the new company combined the Nash and Hudson businesses and became the country’s fourth-largest automaker at formation. Its early product strategy brought Nash and Hudson models together, then shifted toward compact Rambler cars. Rambler became a marque in its own right in 1958, and the Nash and Hudson brands were dropped. The company later used American Motors as the passenger-car brand, while its product range included compact cars, performance models, and four-wheel-drive vehicles. In 1970, American Motors acquired Kaiser Jeep, adding the Jeep business and expanding its vehicle range. The company’s later models included the Hornet, Gremlin, Matador, Pacer, Concord, and Spirit. Renault acquired a significant interest in American Motors in 1979. Chrysler acquired the company in 1987, ending its run as an independent automaker.
