American Stores Company began in 1917 when Philadelphia’s Acme Tea Company combined with four local grocery businesses to form a 1,223-store chain. It grew to nearly 1,800 stores by 1925 and bought 305 grocery and meat stores in northern New Jersey in 1928. Later milestones included acquiring California’s Alpha Beta in 1961 and merging with the Skaggs Companies in 1979; the combined company kept the American Stores name and was headquartered in Salt Lake City. In 1984 it acquired Jewel Companies, adding Jewel Food Stores, Osco Drug, Star Market, Sav-on Drugs, Buttrey Food Stores and White Hen. The company acquired Lucky Stores in 1988, then sold or restructured several businesses as it reduced debt and consolidated operations. In 1992 it began a company-wide integration plan, while continuing to operate familiar grocery and pharmacy banners. Albertsons announced its acquisition in August 1998, and the deal was completed in June 1999. American Stores was delisted and ceased to exist as a company; Albertsons retained the Acme Markets, Jewel-Osco, Osco Drug and Sav-on Drugs names, while Lucky stores were later rebranded.
