Anadarko Petroleum Corporation was formed in 1959 as a subsidiary of Panhandle Eastern Corporation Pipe Line Company, following major natural gas discoveries in the Anadarko Basin. The basin extends beneath parts of Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, Kansas, and Colorado. In 1986, Panhandle Eastern distributed its Anadarko interests to shareholders in a corporate spin-off, making Anadarko a public company. The company expanded through acquisitions, including Union Pacific Resources in 2000, Berkeley Petroleum in 2001, Western Gas Resources in 2006, and Kerr-McGee in 2006. Its business included hydrocarbon exploration and production, natural gas and petroleum processing and transportation, and some hard-minerals interests. Anadarko established its headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas, where two office towers were completed in 2014 and named for former chief executives. In 2014, it agreed to a $5.15 billion settlement for environmental cleanup connected to sites inherited through the Kerr-McGee purchase. In 2019, Occidental Petroleum acquired Anadarko after outbidding Chevron. The acquisition ended Anadarko's history as an independent public company.
