Anadarko Petroleum Corporation was formed in 1959 as a subsidiary of Panhandle Eastern Corporation Pipe Line Company, following major natural gas discoveries in the Anadarko Basin. In 1986, Panhandle Eastern distributed its Anadarko interests to shareholders in a corporate spin-off, making Anadarko a public company. The company expanded through acquisitions, including Union Pacific Resources in 2000, Berkeley Petroleum in 2001, Western Gas Resources in 2006, and Kerr-McGee in 2006. Its business included hydrocarbon exploration and production, natural gas and petroleum processing and transportation, and some hard-minerals interests. Anadarko established its headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas, where two office towers were completed in 2014 and named for former chief executives. In 2014, it agreed to a $5.15 billion settlement for environmental cleanup connected to sites inherited through the Kerr-McGee purchase. In 2019, Occidental Petroleum acquired Anadarko after outbidding Chevron. The acquisition ended Anadarko's history as an independent public company.
