GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Keep a small reminder of New England shopping history close at hand with this Ann & Hope Square Porcelain Fridge Magnet. The retailer began at its Cumberland mill in 1953 and grew into a regional chain whose self-service layout and broad merchandise made it part of everyday life for many shoppers. Its story later continued through outlet stores and garden destinations. A collectible keepsake for former customers, Rhode Island history fans and anyone interested in the evolution of American retail.

Ann & Hope was a Rhode Island retailer founded by Martin Chase, whose family had moved to Providence from Kiev when he was six. After working in clothing stores and operating Chase Clothing, Chase bought the Ann & Hope Mill complex in Lonsdale, Cumberland, in 1946 and rented its spaces to tenants. In 1953, after a tenant left ribbon behind, the Chase family began selling it at the mill; Chase then opened a clothing store there, first on the third floor and, by the following spring, on the ground floor. The business broadened its merchandise and reached $40 million in annual sales by 1969. Its self-service format, large shopping carts, central checkout, return policy, generous parking, and multilevel merchandise helped make it an early model for big-box retail. The company operated across the Northeast from 1953 to 2001. Most department stores closed in spring 2001, while Cumberland and Warwick remained as smaller outlet stores. The business later focused on Curtain & Bath and garden outlets in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. In 2020 it announced closure of its remaining outlet stores, with some garden centers possibly continuing. In 2022, the Warwick property was sold to Crossroads Capital Fund VI LLC and the Cumberland mill complex to Providence-based Hartford Holdings LLC.
