Product Details & Size Guide
Bring a little Apple computing history into your everyday rotation with this Newton-inspired quarter zip pullover. The Newton project began in 1987 and grew into a family of MessagePad devices and licensed products running Newton OS. Apple unveiled the platform in 1992, pairing portable design with handwriting input at a time when personal digital assistants were still a new idea. Though discontinued in 1998, Newton remains a memorable experiment in the evolution of mobile computing.
Apple developed the Newton as a personal digital assistant platform, beginning work in 1987. Conceived by Apple employee Steve Sakoman as a tablet-like device with handwriting capabilities, the project initially involved work with AT&T on a low-power processor. After Sakoman left Apple in 1990, Michael Tchao and Steve Capps revived the idea and presented it to CEO John Sculley. Apple later invested in Acorn Computers, which developed an ARM6-based processor for the device. Apple introduced the Newton on May 29, 1992, and shipments began on August 2, 1993. Apple’s MessagePad line was joined by Newton devices from licensed third-party manufacturers, all running the proprietary Newton OS. Early handwriting-recognition problems and software instability contributed to delays and negative publicity. Later hardware and Newton OS 2.0 brought improvements, but sales remained below expectations, and competition from the Palm Pilot reduced the platform’s market share. In 1997, after Steve Jobs returned to Apple, the company discontinued the line. Before cancellation, the project became the wholly owned subsidiary Newton, Inc. Though commercially unsuccessful, the Newton influenced ideas used in Apple’s later iPhone and iPad products.
