Set your phone beside a piece of Arizona aviation history. Arizona Airways began service in 1946, flying a 21-passenger DC-3 in Thunderbird livery on routes connecting Phoenix, Tucson, and other communities. The carrier’s pursuit of federally regulated routes reflected the changing shape of postwar regional air travel. It stopped flying in 1948, then joined Monarch and Challenger to form the original Frontier Airlines in 1950. This stand marks a compact, memorable chapter for airline history fans and Arizona collectors.

Arizona Airways incorporated on September 8, 1942, initially to train Navy pilots during World War II. Led by president H.O. “Rocky” Nelson, an engineer and pilot, it began airline service on March 17, 1946, with a 21-passenger DC-3 in Thunderbird livery. Its first circular route linked Tucson, Phoenix, and five other Arizona points. The company sought to acquire a Phoenix–Las Vegas route from TWA, but federal approval did not follow. Arizona Airways expanded around the state, then dropped unprofitable southern destinations and was down to one northern route from Phoenix by January 1948. In February 1948, the Civil Aeronautics Board awarded it four local-service routes: three in Arizona and one via New Mexico to El Paso, Texas. The airline stopped flying on March 1, 1948, and, despite receiving its federal certificate that June, could not raise the funds needed to resume service. Monarch Air Lines agreed to buy it in 1949, and the acquisition was approved in April 1950. On June 1, 1950, Arizona Airways, Monarch, and Challenger Airlines merged to form the original Frontier Airlines. Arizona Airways contributed routes and assets, including three DC-3 aircraft; Nelson became a Frontier vice president.
