GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a piece of Arizona aviation history on your next trip with this Arizona Airways luggage tag. The Phoenix-based carrier began service in 1946 with a 21-passenger DC-3 in distinctive Thunderbird livery, linking Tucson, Phoenix, and other communities across the state. Its brief journey through postwar regional air travel ended when it joined two other airlines to form the original Frontier Airlines in 1950. A thoughtful travel accessory for collectors who appreciate early airline stories and Arizona history.
Arizona Airways incorporated on September 8, 1942, initially to train Navy pilots during World War II. Led by president H.O. “Rocky” Nelson, an engineer and pilot, it began airline service on March 17, 1946, with a 21-passenger DC-3 in Thunderbird livery. Its first circular route linked Tucson, Phoenix, and five other Arizona points. The company sought to acquire a Phoenix–Las Vegas route from TWA, but federal approval did not follow. Arizona Airways expanded around the state, then dropped unprofitable southern destinations and was down to one northern route from Phoenix by January 1948. In February 1948, the Civil Aeronautics Board awarded it four local-service routes: three in Arizona and one via New Mexico to El Paso, Texas. The airline stopped flying on March 1, 1948, and, despite receiving its federal certificate that June, could not raise the funds needed to resume service. Monarch Air Lines agreed to buy it in 1949, and the acquisition was approved in April 1950. On June 1, 1950, Arizona Airways, Monarch, and Challenger Airlines merged to form the original Frontier Airlines. Arizona Airways contributed routes and assets, including three DC-3 aircraft; Nelson became a Frontier vice president.
