GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a New York retail history reference to the course with Arnold Constable & Company golf balls. The company’s roots reach back to 1825, when Aaron Arnold opened a small dry goods shop on Front Street. Over time, the business became known for its grand Broadway flagship and Fifth Avenue presence, then expanded into suburban communities. For department store enthusiasts and collectors, this set connects a familiar pastime with the changing story of American shopping and a landmark New York retailer.
Arnold Constable & Company began in 1825 as Aaron Arnold’s small dry goods store at 91 Front Street in lower Manhattan. Arnold, who had immigrated from the Isle of Wight, moved the business to Pine Street and took his nephews George and James Hearn as partners; they operated as Arnold and Hearn until 1842. That year, employee James Mansell Constable joined as a partner, and the company adopted its lasting name in 1853. The store moved to Canal Street in 1857, then opened a marble emporium on Broadway at East 19th Street in 1869. Expanded through Fifth Avenue in 1876–77, the flagship became known as the Palace of Trade and served New York’s carriage trade. The company also established a Paris branch in 1855 and had a London store. In 1914 it moved its main store to Fifth Avenue and 40th Street. A 1925 combination with Stewart & Company preceded suburban growth, beginning with New Rochelle in 1937. The main store was sold to the New York Public Library in 1961, with retail space leased back until the store closed in 1975. Smaller stores continued under NoName and Garment District names; remaining operations were sold to Canadian retailer Y M Inc. in the 1990s.
