Art Van Furniture was an American furniture retailer founded in 1959 by Archie “Art” Van Elslander. Its first store opened in a 4,000-square-foot space at 10 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue in East Detroit, and the chain grew to three stores that year. Early offerings emphasized modern and Danish-style furniture. By 1963, the business had seven stores and several partners; after selling three locations in 1964, Van Elslander expanded again. The company bought its Warren, Michigan, headquarters in 1973 and opened stores in Flint and Lansing in 1977. It introduced PureSleep mattress departments and stores in 2009, then acquired Brewbaker’s Furniture in 2010 and Mattress World in 2011. Expansion beyond Michigan began in Illinois and Ohio in 2013, followed by Iowa in 2016. Private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners acquired Art Van in March 2017; later that year, the company acquired Levin Furniture and Wolf Furniture. A flagship opened in Canton, Michigan, in 2018. In March 2020, Art Van announced store closures and filed for bankruptcy. Some locations reopened as Loves Furniture & Mattresses, which later filed for bankruptcy and closed in 2021. Levin Furniture returned to former owner Robert Levin, while other former locations passed to different furniture retailers.
