Bring a chapter of American express freight history into everyday wear with this ASTAR Air Cargo polo. The airline began in 1969 as DHL Worldwide Express, later operated as DHL Airways, and adopted the ASTAR name in 2003 after a management buyout. Its story connects Miami, the Cincinnati-area operating base, and a changing relationship with DHL. A thoughtful choice for aviation enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate the people, names, and transitions behind cargo airline history.
ASTAR Air Cargo was an American cargo airline based in Miami, Florida, with its main base at Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport in Hebron, Kentucky, and hubs in Miami and Los Angeles. The airline began operations in 1969 as DHL Worldwide Express, formed by Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn. It was spun off from DHL, with a majority stake sold to a private investor to meet federal foreign-ownership requirements. After FedEx and UPS questioned DHL Airways’ U.S. citizenship and operational control, the company adopted the DHL Airways name on December 22, 1981, and expanded services to Asia and Australia. In July 2003, John Dasburg completed a management buyout; the airline took the ASTAR Air Cargo name on June 30. DHL and the United States Air Force were its two target customers. DHL acquired minority nonvoting and voting stakes in 2007 and gained a board seat. In 2008, DHL announced plans to shift air transportation to UPS, but withdrew that plan in May 2009, and ASTAR continued operating from DHL’s Cincinnati facility. After DHL abruptly ended its contract effective June 1, 2012, ASTAR shut down cargo operations and stored its remaining active aircraft.
