Its name changed to Astoria Savings & Loan Association in 1936, and in 1937 it received a federal charter and became Astoria Federal Savings & Loan Association. Astoria Financial Corporation was formed in 1993 as part of the conversion from a mutual organization to a joint-stock company. Based in Lake Success, New York, the company was a bank holding company, and Astoria Bank was its principal subsidiary. At December 31, 2016, the bank operated 88 locations. On October 2, 2017, Astoria Financial Corporation was acquired by Sterling Bancorp. At the merger, the two banks had a combined value of approximately $30 billion in assets, $20 billion in gross loans, and more than $19 billion in deposits; they planned to operate under the Sterling Bancorp name.
