Start the day with a reminder of Astoria Bank’s documented New York history. The institution was chartered by New York State in 1888, took new names in 1936 and 1937, and expanded through acquisitions during the 1990s. Astoria Financial Corporation followed in 1993, while the 2017 acquisition brought another chapter to the story. This mug is a fitting keepsake for former customers and collectors interested in the evolution of regional banks.
Astoria Bank was chartered by New York State in 1888. Its name changed to Astoria Savings & Loan Association in 1936, and in 1937 it received a federal charter and became Astoria Federal Savings & Loan Association. During the 1990s, it acquired several banks in the New York area: Fidelity New York Savings Bank in 1995 for $160 million in cash, Greater New York Savings Bank in 1997 for $293 million in stock and cash, and Long Island Savings Bank in 1998 for $1.8 billion. Astoria Financial Corporation was formed in 1993 as part of the conversion from a mutual organization to a joint-stock company. Based in Lake Success, New York, the company was a bank holding company, and Astoria Bank was its principal subsidiary. At December 31, 2016, the bank operated 88 locations. On October 2, 2017, Astoria Financial Corporation was acquired by Sterling Bancorp. At the merger, the two banks had a combined value of approximately $30 billion in assets, $20 billion in gross loans, and more than $19 billion in deposits; they planned to operate under the Sterling Bancorp name.
