Let a remarkable railroad story accompany your next journey with this Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Passport Cover. The A&P was incorporated in 1866 to build toward California, but its planned central connection was never completed, leaving two widely separated operating divisions. Its history reaches from Missouri through Oklahoma and across the Southwest, reflecting the bold ambitions and shifting partnerships of nineteenth-century railroads. A distinctive travel companion for railroad enthusiasts, transportation history fans, and collectors who appreciate the story behind the name.
The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad was incorporated by Congress in 1866 to build a route from Springfield, Missouri, toward California, with a branch from Van Buren, Arkansas. The planned central connection was never completed, leaving two separate operating divisions. Its Missouri history began with the Pacific Railroad’s Southwest Branch, built from Franklin, later called Pacific, to Rolla by 1861. After financial failures and transfers of ownership, the A&P acquired the line in 1867 and extended rails through Missouri to Seneca and west into Oklahoma. In 1876, the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway took over the Missouri division and leased the Central division, later extending service to Tulsa. In 1880, that company and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad agreed to jointly control the A&P. The Western division was built from Isleta, New Mexico, to Needles, California, where it met the Southern Pacific in 1883. Following receiverships in the 1890s, the Western division passed to the Santa Fe Pacific Railroad in 1897, while the Central division went to the reorganized St. Louis and San Francisco Railway. The A&P ceased to exist that year. Its two segments entered successor systems that ultimately joined in the 1995 creation of BNSF Railway.
