Bring a piece of South Jersey sporting history into your everyday rotation with this Atlantic City Race Course polo. The track opened in Mays Landing in 1946 and became a landmark for Thoroughbred racing, entertainment, and memorable local events. Its story includes Kelso’s two-year-old debut and the 1969 Atlantic City Pop Festival, giving this piece a connection to more than one chapter of regional history. A thoughtful choice for racecourse enthusiasts and collectors of New Jersey heritage.
Atlantic City Race Course opened on July 22, 1946, in Mays Landing, Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. It was created by John B. Kelly Sr., Fred C. Scholler, Glendon Robertson and James “Sonny” Fraser, with show-business figures including Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope among its shareholders. The course became known for Thoroughbred racing, and Kelso made his two-year-old debut there on September 4, 1959. In 1964, scenes for Alfred Hitchcock’s film Marnie were shot at the venue; in August 1969, it hosted the Atlantic City Pop Festival. Casino openings and competition from regional racetracks later contributed to declining attendance and racing activity. After its owner announced a planned final meet in 1998, the track continued operating short meets, in part to retain its simulcast permit. It was sold in 2001 to the owners of Philadelphia Park Racetrack and became primarily a simulcast facility. Live racing continued on a limited schedule. Greenwood ACRA announced on January 9, 2015, that operations would cease permanently; the final day of racing was January 16, 2015.
