The ACL name appeared in advertising as early as 1871 and later represented a major southeastern system reaching from Virginia through the Carolinas and into Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. This metal sign is made for collectors drawn to classic railroad identity, Florida travel lore, steam-era memories, and the system’s 1967 transition into Seaboard Coast Line.
Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, known by the reporting mark ACL, was a United States Class I railroad formally formed in 1900, although the Atlantic Coast Line name had been used in advertising since 1871. Its roots included routes linking Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia, with Weldon and Wilmington, North Carolina, then Florence and Charleston, South Carolina. Consolidations in the late 1890s brought the Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina lines into a single system. The railroad expanded through acquisitions, including the Plant System in 1902 and the Atlanta, Birmingham and Coast Railroad, acquired in 1927 and merged in 1945. Its main line ran from Richmond to south of Tampa, while the wider network reached Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. ACL developed major Florida-bound passenger service and upgraded its railroad through the mid-1950s. It retired its last steam locomotive in 1955 and moved headquarters from Wilmington to Jacksonville in 1956. On July 1, 1967, ACL merged with Seaboard Air Line Railroad to create Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Much of its original network has been part of CSX Transportation since 1986.
