Product Details & Size Guide
Ayr-Way’s story started in Indianapolis in 1961, when L. S. Ayres and Company introduced a discount-store format distinct from its department-store roots. This beanie celebrates the brief but memorable name that grew into a 40-store chain and became part of the story behind familiar Target locations. It is a fitting pick for anyone who remembers local shopping landmarks, collects historic retail names, or enjoys the evolution of American stores. Wear a little Indianapolis retail history and keep the Ayr-Way chapter in view.
Ayr-Way was the discount-store subsidiary of L. S. Ayres and Company, an Indianapolis department-store business founded in 1872. Ayres developed the format in 1961 and opened the first Ayr-Way store on October 13 of that year at Thirty-eighth Street and Pendleton Pike in Indianapolis. It was among the first discount-store divisions launched by a traditional full-line department store, preceding the first Kmart and Target stores. Ayres later operated Ayr-Way locations in other cities and briefly added food stores, but sold its food business in 1970 and focused on general merchandise. Associated Dry Goods acquired Ayres in 1972. In 1976, following federal antitrust concerns, Associated Dry Goods sold Ayr-Way to Stephens Inc.; the transaction closed in early 1977. Dayton-Hudson Corporation acquired the chain in 1980, when it comprised 40 stores and a distribution center. The stores were remodeled and reopened as Target stores in 1981. Ayr-Way thus links an Indianapolis department-store enterprise to the early history of discount retailing and to a later national retail brand.

This cuffed beanie carries a lived-in street energy—soft, warm, and quietly bold. The low-profile embroidery sits on the cuff like a personal insignia: a small, slightly distressed logo with a touch of red that reads as both vintage and current. It slips on easily and stays put through commutes, late-night walks, and chilly market runs, adding a subtle graphic edge without shouting.
Wear it with a worn denim jacket, layered knit, or an oversized coat. It works for creatives who like to curate a look that’s casual but considered, for city cyclists who need dependable warmth, or for anyone who favors compact, tactile details. The hypoallergenic acrylic knit keeps things comfortable against the skin while the 12" cuff gives you styling flexibility—fold it high for warmth or roll it low for a slouchier silhouette. This is a small, everyday piece that quietly completes an outfit and ages into its own personality.
