Product Details & Size Guide

GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Bring the story of B. Altman and Company into your daily travels. From its Lower East Side beginnings to the Italian Renaissance-style Fifth Avenue flagship opened in 1906, the store reflected New York’s changing retail landscape. Later suburban branches carried the name beyond Manhattan, while memories of refined service, Christmas windows, and Charleston Gardens restaurants remain part of its appeal. This travel mug celebrates a long-closed department store and is a fitting pick for history-minded commuters, New York enthusiasts, and collectors of department-store culture.

B. Altman and Company began as a family-owned store on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and was solely owned by Benjamin Altman by 1865. After relocating to Sixth Avenue in 1877, the business moved in 1906 to its flagship at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, later expanded through 1913. The Italian Renaissance-style building was designed by Trowbridge & Livingston. Altman was among the early department stores to move from the Ladies’ Mile district to Fifth Avenue, helping encourage other retailers to follow. From the 1930s, the chain expanded into suburban New York and neighboring states, with branches in White Plains, Manhasset, East Orange, Short Hills, Ridgewood/Paramus, St. Davids and Willow Grove. After Benjamin Altman’s death in 1913, his stock went to the Altman Foundation. The foundation sold the stores in 1986; Australian developer L.J. Hooker acquired controlling interest in 1987. The company filed for bankruptcy in August 1989. The flagship closed at the end of 1989, and all branches had shut by the end of January 1990. The landmarked Fifth Avenue building later housed institutions including the City University of New York Graduate Center and the New York Public Library’s Science, Industry and Business Library.
