B. Dalton Bookseller was an American bookstore chain founded in 1966 by Bruce Dayton, whose family operated the Dayton's department store chain in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Its first shop opened in Edina, Minnesota, in August 1966, followed by a store in St. Louis, Missouri. The chain grew from 12 stores in 1968 to 125 in 1973 and reached 798 locations in 1986, with most shops in regional shopping malls. It acquired Pickwick Books in 1968; the businesses merged in 1979, and the Pickwick name returned for discount shops from 1983 to 1986. Dayton Hudson Corporation, formed in 1969 when Dayton's merged with Hudson's, sold B. Dalton to Barnes & Noble in 1987. Under its new owner, the chain acquired Scribner Book Stores in 1989 and began closing or relocating stores as its footprint contracted. Barnes & Noble announced in late 2009 that the final 50 stores would close by January 2010. The Union Station shop in Washington, D.C., remained open until February 2013, after the Roosevelt Field Mall store closed in January 2012. In February 2022, Barnes & Noble revived the name by rebranding its Oviedo Mall location.
